We stayed at the Lataba camp earlier this week. Wow, the elephants! We had sightings all day— a herd of at least thirty elephants drinking, splashing, and playing in the river, with a second herd on the hill across the way. We passed elephant after elephant munching trees along the roadside.
Our camp, though, turned out to be the best elephant spot ever. Both late afternoon and after dark, elephants came by the fence to eat, sometimes within a few meters of us. They were huge and that fence, though electrified, looked pretty insubstantial next to them. As I was taking pics, I stepped a little too close to one big guy who gave a very loud trumpet and an impressive ear flap to let me know I needed to step back. I nearly knocked over both our chairs backing up.
